Happy Sunday,

I’ve decided to research Horror, as it is a potential genre my partner and I want to create our film about. We are very interested in pursuing isolated horror as it has recently been created and released by many, which not to mention, has been extremely successful.
To continue, isolated horror creates a jeepers creepers tone as there is nobody else around to help the victim. Personally, I get a thrill out of this type of genre, as well as my friends. The target audience is teens and young adults as adrenaline is constantly flowing through our bodies at a faster rate, and we strive to feel this rush. Of course, horror appeals to older adults moreover with a specific content, but it’s mainly those who are under the age of 25.
Typically, horror film makers incorporate specific lightings, locations, make-up designs, and sounds to enhance the scariest parts of their films. For example, lowkey lighting creates shadows and strong contrast between lit and unlit parts of the shots. This makes the viewers feel as if something is being hidden, which creates suspense as they are on the edge of their seats waiting for anything to pop out.
Horror films are usually marketed in movie previews, social media, and articles. To draw attention, trailers show a preview of the demon, monster, etc, without exposing how these creatures will scare them or the onscreen victim. If the preview releases too much content, viewers will not be enticed to go watch their film, so it’s in their favor to show the least.
One film that embodies this genre is The Quiet Place, directed by John Krasinski. The storyline is about a family who lives in a post-apocalyptic world where monsters go after anything they hear with their acute sense of hearing. The family’s house is completely isolated from the town, as well as from other people. They have to use sign language to communicate and specific routes to get around quietly. Not only is it scary, but it also includes some action as all the characters have to face the monsters. This is exactly what my partner and I hope to portray in our film opening; a sense of thriller and isolation.
Another film that embodies this genre is The Nun, directed by Corin Hardy. This scary film is about a nun commiting suicide, and which then leads to an investigation. It turns out there is a demonic nun in the church that the two people who were sent there have to get rid of in order to save the holy council. It is very thrilling as there are many dark rooms, and pop ups throughout the film. The church is isolated and slightly destructed from old age, expressing a horrifying history. The sounds and lighting truly brings out a spine-tingling feeling. Onil and I want to make use of these techniques and really take note of the things we admire from this film so we can use them to help us.

Some other examples within horror genre are:
I hope you found my genre research enlightening, thanks for reading! See you guys next posting.
